Abstract

This paper examines the use of support activities offered by technology intermediaries as part of search strategies by their users. Starting from the dyadic relation between users and the technology intermediary, a taxonomy identifies three groups of users. For each of these groups the determinants of their search strategy for information and support for innovation are analysed. Three determinants of search strategies are suggested by the literature and the specificities of (the type of) technology intermediation: absorptive capacity, resource constraints and knowledge articulation. The dyadic relationships also yield information on the degree of (mis)alignment in the perception on the importance of the support activities that are offered. These (mis)alignments, together with the determinants of the search strategy, are further examined in order to capture the effects of the activities offered by technology intermediaries. Multivariate estimation methods are used in this paper to analyse the formulated hypotheses.
