CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE ITCE CLUSTERS FROM THE NORTH OF PORTUGAL
Abstract
The Commission for the Coordination and Regional Development of the North of Portugal (CCDR-N) promoted the NORTINOV 2015 project with the purpose to define a Regional Innovation Strategy for the North of Portugal based on the Automotive, Information Technology, Communications and Electronics clusters. As technology is one of the main driving forces in the regional economic development, a technology foresight for the year 2015 was sought in order to the North of Portugal cope with the intensifying global competition and rapid technological change. This article describes the methodology used to identify the technologies of strategic importance for the regional economy of the North of Portugal under the project NORTINOV 2015. The knowledge and the business infrastructure were taken into account during the study as well as their needs for future development. At the outset of the study 90 emerging technologies were identified. Their assessment was a very complex task. In such a way a methodology was proposed and in the end 30 technologies were identified as critical in the scope of the defined regional innovation strategy.
