Editorial

Dear All,

Are we witnessing the end of the period of continuous global growth of the last two hundreds years that was powered by hard-core technological innovations? How will we cope with change as the recent financial tsunami appears to save nobody? Perhaps these changing times are good for innovators, as one proverb says: "thinking starts when you run out of money". Companies must keep innovating in difficult times as well. Innovations are still needed, but not for sub-prime mortgages or in "creative" book-keeping. Many good solutions will be presented in June in Vienna at the XX ISPIM Conference. ISPIM 2009 is all about the future of innovation and the future seems very positive for innovation if we go by number of submissions as we received over 460 submissions which is almost 40% more than last year. I thank everyone who submitted as this will lead to very interesting presentations, discussions and workshops.

The format for Vienna will be similar to the one intoduced at the 1st ISPIM Innovation Symposium held in Singapore last December, namely facilitated themed sessions. The Singapore event was attended by 182 delegates from 22 countries and it gave us a vivid picture of how innovations can change a whole country. The Singapore Management University was an excellent host for the event, so on the behalf of the delegates and board of ISPIM, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Singapore Management University and especially to Desai Narasimhalu and Adeline Tan!

At the time of writing, the 2nd ISPIM Innovation Symposium has just been announced and will take place in New York City, USA from 6-9 December 2009. The theme of this symposium is Stimulating Recovery - The Role of Innovation Management and the deadline for submissions is 13 September 2009. I think you will all agree that this theme is very relevant!

During the Singapore symposium we also made an important agreement. Publications are important for all of us, especially for the academics amongst us. I am very pleased to announce that ISPIM signed a contract with World Scientific and ISPIM's official journal is now The International Journal of Innovation Management (IJIM). IJIM is a quarterly publication dedicated to the advancement of academic research and management practice in the field of innovation management. We are looking forward to fruitful co-operation with IJIM and its Managing Editor, Prof Joe Tidd.

I looking forward to seeing you in Vienna or New York City or both!

Best wishes,

Prof Marko Torkkeli

1st ISPIM Innovation Symposium, Singapore

In a first for The International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM) a December symposium was held in Singapore to complement the annual European-based conference. Reflecting the growing interest in innovation in general, and the services offered by ISPIM in particular, a healthy 182 delegates enjoyed the hospitality of Professor Desai Narasimhalu, Director of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre, at the state if the art facilities of the Singapore Management University located very conveniently in downtown Singapore.

The symposium nature of the gathering was emphasized by more emphasis being placed on discussion than is usually the case for traditional conferences. Each session had a dedicated facilitator with the purpose to make connection between the papers and to engage the audience in reflection on what had been presented and how it related to the theme of the symposium, “Managing Innovation in a Connected World”. The feedback received at the end of the symposium indicated that the attendees greatly appreciated the effort made to engage more pro-actively with all present, and it is likely that this approach will also be adapted to suit next year’s ISPIM conference to be held in Vienna, June 21-24.

In addition to the 24 paper sessions and 5 workshops, the symposium enjoyed hearing plenary speakers from ISPIM’s ABC (academic, business and consulting) constituencies. After an inspiring opening address by Teo Ming Kian, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, on the role of innovation in Singapore’s implementation of it’s admirable long-term economic development strategy, the symposium heard about the fascinating innovation efforts of OCBC Bank to approaching banking services very differently to their competitors. A raft of service innovations including in opening hours (for most of the audience the notion of a bank opening on a Sunday was a shock) and generating a sense of banking as an opportunity for family fun were outlined by Mrs Teng Soon Lang, Executive VP and Head of OCB’s Group Quality and Process Innovation Division.

We then crossed back to Europe to hear from Johan de Heer, Director of T-Xchange Cell of the Thales Group in the Netherlands, about their use of synthetic serious gaming environments to enhance collaborative decision-making. Innovation in the delivery of customized solutions to the aerospace industry was the topic of Eric Goedhart, VP Global Business Development Aerospace for Kuehne and Nagel.

Aviation also featured in the history of the next speaker, Australian Bruce Burton, CEO of Strategyn Asia Pacific, a consulting firm which has assisted a wide variety of companies to deliver revenue growth through identifying strategic innovative opportunities. Staying in the Australian region, the final keynote speaker was Professor Mark Dodgson, Director of the Technology & Innovation Management Centre at the University of Queensland Business School, who gave us a salutary lesson in appreciating the past, using his own ancestory to illustrate the past, present and future of innovation processes.

The events that ISPIM runs are without exception some of the most well-organised in the sector and it would not be a worthy ISPIM event without evidence of a deep appreciation of the value of networking social functions! The symposium featured a harbour cruise on a large Chinese Junk, a banquet at the famous Wah Lok restaurant and a tour of the Tiger Brewery, most coupled with a good round of karaoke or two from some very seasoned performers.

It is because of the professionalism of the ISPIM organization that their events continue to grow in attractiveness, so much so that their paper rejection rate has had to increase markedly. Providing two events in two different parts of the globe each year has obviously greatly increased the organization’s workload, but is now providing more opportunities for those interested in innovation to gather, debate and learn. No doubt the next event in Vienna will be as equally stimulating and gratifying for those that are able to participate.

Official ISPIM Journal

I am delighted that the International Journal of Innovation (IJIM) is to become the official journal of the ISPIM. I believe that this is an excellent partnership, as both organizations are concerned with the broad issue of managing innovation, rather than a narrow focus on a single aspect such as technology, R&D or new product development. Both are also international, inclusive & practical, and encourage active interaction between academics, managers and consultants.

The IJIM was founded at Imperial College, London, in 1997, and is currently edited by me from SPRU (Science & Technology Policy Research Unit) and published by Imperial College Press. The SPRU link with ISPIM is long-standing, and both Roy Rothwell and John Bessant were involved in early developments of the ISPIM. The rationale for the IJIM was, and remains, that most existing management journals in the field focus on narrow specialist areas, which do not reflect the inter-disciplinary, problem-centred nature of real-life innovation management. This is consistent with the philosophy of the ISPIM.

Key features of the IJIM include:

  • Aims to link the research and practice of innovation management;
  • Focuses on the management and firm levels of analysis, rather than policy or sector issues;
  • Inter-disciplinary, multi-functional problem-oriented approach;
  • Integrates management of technological, organizational and market innovation.

The formal statement of intent for IJIM is: “The International Journal of Innovation Management (IJIM) is a quarterly publication dedicated to the advancement of academic research and management practice in the field of innovation management. The IJIM adopts an interdisciplinary, multifunctional approach, and welcomes contributions which seek to integrate the management of technological, market and organisational innovation. Contributions are based on original empirical research and the observations of experienced managers. Case studies which provide new conceptual or theoretical insights are also invited. The IJIM aims to provide a forum for the insights of academics, practising managers and consultants, and to integrate the theory and practice of innovation management.”

Academic Writing Workshop

Pre-Conference Two-day Workshop for PhD students and Junior Faculty - Vienna, 20-21 June 2009 - on "How to Write Academic Papers for Publication" led by Eelko K.R.E. Huizingh, Associate Professor of Innovation Management at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

'To publish or to perish' is an old cliché in academia but one that is still very much alive. Researchers need published papers for their academic careers, universities need published papers to improve their ranking in performance-based assessments. Many researchers are well able to complete research projects but struggle with the process of writing sound academic papers. They usually acquire writing skills through a lengthy process of trial and error. Dedicated teaching and training in writing skills enables PhD students and junior faculty to shorten the learning process considerably.

Converting the findings of a research project into a publishable paper takes a thorough understanding of what the findings contribute to current knowledge. It also requires the author to understand and follow the standards of academic writing.

Following the format of the successful ISPIM 2007 and 2008 workshops, we present and discuss the essential elements of academic writing in this two-day workshop. We analyze both published and participants’ papers. This enables the participants not only to learn about writing academic papers, but also to put this knowledge into practice. The workshop has an interactive format with a limited number of participants.

  • Target group: PhD students and junior faculty
  • Maximum number of participants: 14
  • Admission: Registration on a first-come first-served basis
  • Deadline: 5 June 2009
  • Schedule: Saturday & Sunday 20-21 June 2009, 10:00 – 17:00 hrs
  • Venue: Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria
  • Participation fee: 450 Euros (350 Euros for ISPIM Conference delegates)
  • Registration: Please send an email to Steffen Conn at conn@ispim.org.

Call for Papers: The First International Conference on Service Science and Innovation (ICSSI 2009)

Over the years, we have witnessed the growing market and rising dominance of services to the global economy. The rapid advance of technology allows firms to export their knowledge, creativity, and innovations into global markets and provide services that are previously available only to local customers. The remarkable growth of service economy is derived not only from traditional service industries, but also from manufacturing and technology industries that have recognized the need to provide revenue-generating quality services in order to compete in the world. The competition keeps intensifying swiftly as the challengers from developing economies such Brazil, China, India, and Russia in which services are growing at 30% per year. Breaking down the boundary of industrial sectors and geographical regions, companies nowadays are competing with their rivals on everything around the globe. How would the development of service science help these companies compete in this new era? In light of these trends, the first ICSSI will serve as a forum that allows researchers and practitioners from different fields to meet with each other for intellectual exchanges, research collaborations, and professional development.

Important Dates:

  • Paper Submission Deadline: April 1, 2009
  • Notification of Acceptance: May 31, 2009
  • Camera-ready Copy due: June 15, 2009
