Dear Members and Friends,
New opportunities and exciting events are awaiting us in the New Year.
Before focusing on the future, let us briefly look back over our shoulder to our most recent event, the 2nd ISPIM Innovation Symposium. This event took place December 6-9, 2009 in New York. The symposium theme was a timely one, Stimulating Recovery - The Role of Innovation Management. Recessions are associated with cost cutting, lay offs, and cancelled projects. Hard times for all of us. Personally, I found it encouraging to learn both at the sessions and the many small talks during our social events, that the picture in many companies is different. Of course, innovation projects have to be justified, even a bit more thorough than in the good times. However, the general picture I left New York with is that most companies and governments realize that innovation is not so much about spending money but about investing in the future. Innovation is regarded much more as a way out of the crisis, than as a victim of the crisis. From theory, we all know about anti-cyclical investment, but that is easier said than done. My impression that is that even in these hard times, many companies manage to implement this textbook wisdom. That is good news for all of us!
More good news is that we had 190 submissions for New York and ultimately exactly 100 presentations. This implies a final acceptance rate of about 50%. We, as ISPIM board, are happy with this statistic. It means that our events become more and more competitive, with the obvious positive effect on quality. For the Bilbao conference, the deadline was 31 December 2009, we expect an acceptance rate well below 50%. I hope you submitted some really good stuff!
Another novel experience we had in New York is that we had to turn down about 30 (!) people. Not so long ago, 30 people referred to half or a third of all delegates at an ISPIM event. Now we have grown so big that we have to reject so many people because we simply cannot accommodate them. The good news is that so many people are interested in our events, the bad news is that we had to disappoint so many interested innovators. We hope to see all them at our next event, in Bilbao, 6-9 June 2010.
Regardless of the size of our events, we consider social events at ISPIM meetings as very important. In New York, we had some excellent events. Although it was quite windy and cold outside, both the dinner cruise on the Hudson River around lower Manhattan and the visit to the top of the Empire State Building were unforgettable experiences. Not only because these events in itself are unique, most of all because they were an excellent opportunity to meet new innovation friends. Both my contacts during the conferences, as well numerous emails received after the symposium, confirmed that we have succeeded in reaching our goal of serving ISPIM events as a platform where innovation experts can meet and greet each other.
When looking forward into this New Year, we witness first our 21st conference in Bilbao. Probably this will be the largest ISPIM event ever, still we will do our utmost best to maintain the unique ISPIM atmosphere. Out unique platform function requires us to organize the event in such a way that it smells like a small scale event, while in reality it is big (at least according our own standards).
So, definitely a new, exciting year is waiting for us. I sincerely wish you a happy, healthy and innovative 2010!

The 2010 ISPIM Conference - The Dynamics of Innovation - will be held in Bilbao, Spain on 6-9 June 2010. Organised by ISPIM and hosted by Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency, this conference will bring together academics, business leaders, consultants and other professionals involved in innovation management. The conference format will include facilitated themed sessions for academic and practitioner presentations together with interactive workshops and discussion panels. Additionally, the conference will provide excellent networking opportunities together with a taste of local Basque culture.
Stimulating and managing innovation is a journey into the unknown that requires dynamic capabilities for a dynamic environment. Customers are unable to articulate their ever changing needs, new technologies are promising but not proven, production facilities are still untested and in development, and organisations have to be made ready for change when no destination but only a direction is known. Innovation is a continuous process to meet vague, ambiguous and contradicting requirements, where budgets and time schedules are always strict. The dynamics of this process call for leadership, well-trained and motivated participants, evolving business models, the right partnerships and the use of new virtual tools. Innovation management may look like managing the unmanageable, but it is a real world challenge to ensure future competitive strength of companies, governments and regions.
Conference Sub-themes:
Submissions from academics, consultants and managers on innovation-related topics are strongly encouraged and should focus on the following:

ISPIM Papers Online / Google Scholar
You might be aware that one benefit of being an ISPIM member is online access to all papers and presentations made at ISPIM events since Porto in 2005. There are more than 800 titles in this innovation knowledgebase for your use. We have now improved this by making all abstracts searchable by keyword or author within ispim.org, with clickthroughs to the full text version of the papers. We have also publically listed the abstracts in Google Scholar. Of course, full text access remains restricted to ISPIM Members only.
The number of outlines being submitted to ISPIM for events (470 for Vienna and 190 for New York) has grown markedly over the last few years. At the same time, the evaluation process for the outlines has become increasingly rigorous with higher rejection rates (37% for Vienna) and greater feedback given. These two factors have combined to make the work for the scientific evaluation panel both longer and harder.
ISPIM is therefore inviting applicants to join the Scientific Panel on a permanent basis to help share the load. Panel members evaluate 30-35 outlines in September and again in early January. This takes 2 - 3 hours on each occasion. Although most members do both, it is not necessary to do both every year. However, we do insist that all members contribute regularly and meet the deadlines they sign up for. We don't have honorary positions!
Naturally, we rely largely on the goodwill of the members, as the positions are unpaid. The benefits to members, however, are some small prestige in being listed as a member, the chance to develop the scientific content of ISPIM and contribute to scholarship and knowledge in your domain of expertise.
Applicants must hold a PhD level qualification or have more than 10 years senior experience in industry and have acted in a similar capacity before for a scientific body.
If you are interested in applying, please email Steffen Conn at conn@ispim.org and include a brief CV or statement of suitability.

Honouring Knut Holt, ISPIM's Founder
A symposium in honour of Knut Holt, ISPIM's Founder, took place on Thursday, 12th November 2009 at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. The event was attended by Iain Bitran, ISPIM's Executive Director and José Carlos Caldeira, ISPIM's Director of Association Development who presented Knut with ISPIM's Lifetime Achievement Award.

from left to right: José Carlos Caldeira, Ann Holt, Knut Holt, Iain Bitran
ISPIM has its origins in an initiative taken by Knut Holt at the University of Trondheim in 1973 (although the idea came about after a dinner meeting with Horst Geschka in Darmstadt, Germany on 8th November 1972!). He started and organised a programme of comparative cross cultural studies on Needs Assessment and Information Behaviour: the NAIB Program. The objective was to present an array of tools, as well as guidelines for their practical application for the assessment of user needs in the product innovation processes. During the NAIB Project an international group formally founded ISPIM in Trondheim, Norway in June 1983. Since then, ISPIM has succeeded in developing a strong international network, leading to professional cooperation across nations and cultures.
The history of the first 13 years of ISPIM can be downloaded here.
Desai Narasimhalu of Singapore Management University and an ISPIM Advisory Board Member will deliver a keynote address at the forthcoming Abu Dhabi Innovation Forum to take place in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 11-12 January 2010.

Future Agenda: Open Innovation meets New Opportunity Identification
by Tim Jones, Programme Director
While the Open Innovation bandwagon has been gaining momentum and cutting across product, service and now business model arenas a major area where organisational and topic silos have remained unchanged has been that of strategic foresight. Although many companies have been keen to start up open collaborations around creating, developing and launching new innovations, to date few have been willing to share their view of how the future will unfold and what will be the big opportunity spaces. This is happily now changing.
Traditionally companies have used strategic foresight and future insight programmes to inform them largely on how opportunities will unfold in and around their core areas of focus. So food companies have looked at the future of food, oil companies at the future of energy and architects at the future of cities. What has not happened until recently has been the bringing together of all of these topics so that the inter-relationships, catalysts for global change and hence innovation spaces can be more clearly seen in a broader sense. Shell’s Technology Futures programmes and IBM’s Global Innovation Outlook have been the leading cross-sector moves in this area – and have produced notable results from Shell’s investments in marine algae to IBM’s launch of a water business. But both have limited input to a select invited group.
Vodafone are now sponsoring a unique global foresight programme that is seeking to turn traditional approaches on their heads and bring open thinking and open approaches together in this strategically significant area of finding the next big thing: The futureagenda.org site went live at the end of October with initial perspectives on the big challenges and best routes forward for the next decade. Covering 16 topics – everything from food, energy and health to choice, identity and connectivity, these initial views are now being built upon. Anyone can add their thoughts via the website (5000 visitors from 115 countries in the first two weeks) and at the same time feedback is also being gained from a series of workshops around the world – some in companies, some in universities and some just bringing together people around a couple of topics.
The unique elements are that this is global from the start, everyone who participates gets access to all the data and, as part of the programme, connections are being made between different people around different topics so that collective, but informed, views on where the most urgent need for future innovation focus can be seen. The programme runs through to February and is well worth a few minutes of your time to review – and ideally worth adding a couple of your thoughts into the mix: Not only can you help influence the direction of the debate, but as a contributor, you also gain from accessing everyone else’s views as well: This is a big, bold, ambitious, global experiment, but one which many innovation leaders are participating in.
For more info and to access the site see www.futureagenda.org.
The Future of Innovation by Bettina von Stamm and Anna Trifilova
Bettina von Stamm & Anna Trifilova are delighted to be announcing the fruits of an exciting project – inspired by this year’s ISPIM conference title – drawing on the crowd-sourcing spirit of our time: The Future of Innovation.
The project brings together around 400 leading thinkers on innovation from nearly 60 countries who share their hopes, dreams, dears and aspirations of what Innovation’s future holds. All contributions, which were restricted to 500 words, can be found on the website www.thefutureofinnovation.org; many members of the ISPIM community can already be found there – and perhaps even more in the future (should you decide to share your views online which is still possible).
Over 200 have been knitted together by Bettina and Anna into a book (same title of course) to create a rich, colourful picture and taking its reader on a journey into the future of innovation (Gower, November 2009). You can download some extracts as well as order The Future of Innovation from www.gowerpublishing.com/isbn/9780566092138.
European Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2.0
Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency and host of the XXI ISPIM Conference, is creating a community of people interested in sharing information about their regions, and their views about how innovation should be measured at regional level. Their target will be to have some 50 innovation professionals sharing knowledge, statistical information and the last trends about this matter by the end of 2009. They have created a LinkedIn group called European Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2.0.

New Handbook – Making Research Work for Your Company
If you are a SME or RTD who is contemplating an EU project, you should go to www.useanddiffuse.eu and download a new Handbook. Compiled from a European wide survey of SMEs previously involved in projects and conducted by University of Bedfordshire academic Dr Elly Philpott, this Handbook is word searchable, easy to read and provides insights rarely available elsewhere. The Handbook will help readers with issues such as the types of outcome to expect, IP 'must dos', as well as success factors and barriers to success.
'Making Research Work for your Company: A Strategic Guide to the Use and Dissemination of the results of Research and Development Projects’ is a freely available resource. Funded by the European Commission, the Handbook can be freely downloaded via the 'Use and Diffuse' website at www.useanddiffuse.eu.
Benjamin’s thesis “Knowledge Sharing in Collaborative R&D Projects” discusses how to effectively and efficiently share knowledge between collaboration partners – with a special focus on R&D intensive fields. It is based on a large scale survey of all 2,492 German professors in Biology and Chemistry. With a response rate of 33%, he is able to address four major research questions on: (1) the role of collaborative R&D in the chemical and biological sciences, (2) the characteristics of knowledge in both fields, (3) main enhancers and inhibitors of knowledge sharing between academics, and (4) the influence of the knowledge dimensions (i.e. tacit/explicit knowledge). Building on his comprehensive analyses, he derives theoretical and practical implications for collaborative R&D projects in the biological and chemical sciences. In contrast to earlier studies, he explicitly examines the perspectives and motivations of academics. The obtained practical implications are of particular relevance to academic and industrial scientists as well as funding agencies. According to his results, it is of absolute importance to continuously work on the development and nurturing of relationships. In this light, he calls on funding agencies to provide more funds for travelling and co-location of scientists. Furthermore, scientists should put large emphasis on a sufficient amount of new knowledge to be shared by a potential collaborator, while at the same time building on a mutual understanding of each other’s works. Benjamin has successfully defended his thesis (summa cum laude) on November 30th 2009, with Prof. Dr. Hellmut Eckert and Prof. Dr. Meinhard Knoll as opponents and Prof. Dr. Jens Leker as supervisor.
